What is Hypnotherapy?
Hypnotherapy is rooted in science and psychology. Unlike common belief the individual is always in control. It is not like being unconscious or asleep—you’re still aware of your surroundings—but your mind is more absorbed in inner experiences, making you more receptive to guided imagery, suggestions, or therapeutic interventions. Contrary to some popular misconceptions, hypnotherapy is not about mind control or stage tricks—it is a safe, collaborative process designed to support personal growth and healing.
What to expect in a session:
The therapist will talk to you and find out about your goals in a supportive and comfortable environment. In an empathetic manner, the therapist guides you into a gentle relaxed state using calming words, breathing, or imagery. This helps you to get into a deep state of focused attention, which helps to quieten the conscious, analytical mind and allows the subconscious to become more receptive to new ideas. Clients remain aware and in control throughout the session, and they can choose whether to accept the suggestions offered.
While in hypnosis, the therapist offers positive suggestions, guided imagery, or metaphors to help with your specific goals. While in hypnosis, the therapist can explore the issues that you would like to work on; this can be through having a therapeutic conversation. In this state, it may be possible for to reach some clarity and connect with your inner resources. Additionally, the therapist may offer positive suggestions, guided imagery, or metaphors to help with your specific goals. The therapist would gently guide you back to full alertness where you would return to a state of full consciousness or wakefulness ; usually feeling relaxed, refreshed, and aware. At this point, you would discuss how you felt and any insights you gained. The therapist would often teach you self-hypnosis so that you can practise at home. They may also give you exercises or tasks to complete at home. It all depends on your situation. Personally, I collaborate with you to find what is most suited and comfortable for you and we agree on the approach and methods together.
What does hypnosis feel like?
Clients generally feedback that they experience a deep sense of calm, similar to meditation or daydreaming combined with a feeling of being focused inward, with vivid imagination. Time may feel slower or faster than usual. The important thing to note is that you are always in control — you won’t say or do anything against your will.
Safety & Misconceptions
- You would not lose control. The process is collaborative and cooperative; the therapist’s goals would align with your goals.
- Not everyone experiences hypnosis the same way. Some feel very light and aware, others feel deeply absorbed. Both are normal.
